Letters from captivity show why remembrance is a responsibility today. As part of my research, I have worked on more than 70 prisoner-of-war letters and postcards written by Yugoslav Royal Army officer Jovan Fischer powerful testimonies of that time. This work gained a deeply personal dimension through my meeting with his granddaughter, Avivit Bar-Ilan, today the Ambassador of Israel to Serbia. The letters and documents preserved in her family archive are essential witnesses to war, hope, and survival. They remind us that behind every name stands a person and behind every person a family. Knowing history means taking responsibility in the present and standing against antisemitism and forgettin
